Mark Peterman serves as a senior research associate in the Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security and operates as an aquatic ambulatory service for the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Aquatic Diagnostic Lab. Additionally, he serves as the MSU CVM liaison and aquaculture specialist to the commercial catfish aquaculture industry.

Peterman's expertise includes the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of indoor/outdoor aquaculture production and research systems as well as the culture of multiple freshwater species including channel catfish, blue catfish, hybrid (CxB) catfish, tilapia, largemouth bass, bluegill, grass carp, common carp, red swamp crawfish, and giant freshwater prawn. He is also experienced in food science safety practices, water quality analyses, animal health/disease diagnosis, fish handling/transport techniques, nuisance vegetation management, wildlife damage management, and the identification/mitigation of harmful algal blooms.

Peterman received his BS degree from Mississippi State University in wildlife ecology with an emphasis in fisheries management. He received an MS degree from Auburn University in aquaculture and a PhD from MSU in veterinary medical science research. He has earned professional certifications from the Association of Food and Drug Officials in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point and Sanitary Control Plan, Bureau of Plant Industry as a commercially licensed aquatic pesticide dealer/applicator, and National Association of Underwater Instructors as an Open Water II-Search and Recovery Diver.
