Could you share a bit about your background and research interests?
I am an assistant research professor at the Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Laboratory, part of the Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security (GCAHFS). I hold a Bachelor of Fisheries Science degree from Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies in India, a master’s degree in aquaculture from the Central Institute of Fisheries Education in Mumbai, and a PhD in infectious disease from the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in aquatic virology. My research focuses on investigating the interrelationships among viruses, microorganisms, and aquatic animals, which have significant impacts on global biogeochemical cycles, aquatic animal health, and ocean health. I am also establishing an aquatic genomic epidemiology center for the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi to address emerging diseases in aquaculture and marine animals.

What is your role at GCAHFS?
At GCAHFS, I conduct research at the Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Lab, focusing on the health of aquatic animals and the development of One Health solutions for a sustainable blue economy. I am involved in establishing a Biosafety Level-2 laboratory for investigating emerging diseases in both the aquaculture sector and marine animals like sea turtles and mammals. Additionally, I am working toward creating a core genomics laboratory that will support microbial genome sequencing, molecular diagnostics, and high-performance computing to identify novel pathogens and reduce financial losses for farmers.

From your perspective, how is GCAHFS “taking care of what matters?”
GCAHFS is committed to promoting sustainability and advancing the health of aquatic ecosystems, which is crucial for the well-being of both marine life and coastal economies. Through interdisciplinary research, collaboration with stakeholders, and the development of cutting-edge genomic technologies, we are addressing the critical needs of aquaculture farms, wildlife managers, and policymakers. This commitment plays a significant role in ensuring the sustainability of the coastal economy and the protection of aquatic life.

What is your favorite seafood?
My favorite seafood is char-grilled oysters from New Orleans.
