Julius A. Nukpezah is an assistant professor of Public Policy and Administration at Mississippi State University. His research focuses on state and local government management and finance and examines cash and investments, tax revenue policy, bond ratings, fiscal emergencies, and organization management. Nukpezah also examines the intersection between poverty alleviation policies and rural economic development using microfinance and microenterprise development in developing economies.
Nukpezah teaches public budgeting and financial management, local government finance, contemporary public management, government organization, and administrative theory as well as public policy at the graduate level in addition to a doctoral seminar in organization behavior in the public sector. He also teaches introduction to public policy and political analysis (a quantitative research methods class) at the undergraduate level.
Before joining Mississippi State University, Nukpezah earned his Ph.D. in public administration and management at the University of North Texas, where he taught financial aspects of government, public management, leadership and organizational behavior, and public policy and bureaucracy, among others.
Nukpezah came into academia with public service experience. He was a senior policy advisor at the Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture and coordinated a youth program in agriculture where his office collaborated with several international agencies active in rural economic development. Nukpezah has received fellowships and grants from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation (GIZ), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Chinese Ministry of Commerce, and India’s Special Commonwealth Assistance for Africa Program (SCAAP).
Nukpezah is the recipient of “The Dean’s Eminent Scholar in Social and Behavioral Sciences” in the College of Arts and Sciences award for 2020. He previously received the “Outstanding Graduate Professor” award in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration for 2018. Nukpezah’s articles have appeared in leading public administration journals, including the American Review of Public Administration, Administration & Society, International Journal of Public Administration, and Public Organization Review. He also has work published in Public Budgeting & Finance Public Money & Management; Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting, & Financial Management; Municipal Finance Journal, and International Journal of Critical Accounting. Others are in the Journal of African Business; Risk, Hazards, & Crisis in Public Policy; Global Encyclopedia of Public Administration, Public Policy, and Governance, and several others.
